Well-maintained OM646 and OM651 Viano diesels regularly exceed 250,000-300,000 miles. Multiple owner-documented examples exist beyond 500,000 miles on original bottom ends.

• Regular oil changes (every 10k-12k miles, not 20k) dramatically extends life

On OM646/OM651 engines, the engine code is stamped on the cylinder block near the starter motor, also visible on the timing cover sticker and drivers door pillar. For OM611, check the injection pump mounting area.

30-60 seconds of white smoke on cold start on OM646/OM651 Vianos is usually glow plug or glow plug relay failure. If smoke continues once warm, suspect injector or timing issues.
