Common Problems
Dodge Journey Engine Problems - What It Costs to Fix & When Replacement Makes Sense
The Dodge Journey's 2.0 CRD diesel and 2.4L World Engine petrol dominate UK replacement enquiries. Every rebuilt engine supplied through EngineMarket includes upgraded internal components designed to address the original failure point - plus a minimum 12-month unlimited mileage warranty. Use this decision tool to compare repair vs replacement costs.

Most affected vehicles
Dodge Journey SE 2.4SXT 2.4
Dodge Journey SE 2.4, SXT 2.4, Crossroad 2.4 (2008-2016, ED3 & EDG engine codes)
Failure mileage range
70,000-100,000 miles
Typical failure window
Root cause
Piston ring design allows excessive oil passage into combustion chamber; worsened by short-trip driving and infrequent oil changes.
Repair options & estimated costs (UK ranges)
| Repair tier | Dealer price | Specialist price | What it involves | Longevity / suitability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minor - Preventative Oil Control | £800 - £1,400 | £500 - £900 | New piston rings, valve stem seals, gaskets | May extend life 20-30k miles if caught early; not viable once cylinder scoring occurs |
| Full Replacement - Rebuilt Engine | £3,200 - £4,800 | £1,800 - £3,500 | Complete rebuilt unit with upgraded rings, bench-tested, 12-month warranty | Restores full reliability; best value for engines over 100k miles or with cylinder damage |
Our recommendation
If oil consumption exceeds 1L per 1,000 miles or compression tests show cylinder wear, replacement is more cost-effective than ring replacement. On a Journey worth £3,000-£6,000, a rebuilt ED3 engine preserves residual value.
